Taking pictures

April 20th, 2006

I am having the worst time getting good pics of Jayce anymore. I love the snapshots I get of him but I just can’t get him to sit still for a photo anymore at all. I know, normal toddler and all, but it makes me completely question my thoughts about becoming a children’s photographer. So for about a year now some of my favorite pictures of Jayce have been of his back. So sweet, so thoughtful, so much a cop out… But I recently got one at a ball game that I absolutely love. So without further ado:

All that being said, I have to admit that having a 4 1/2 month old model definitely has its advantages. She doesn’t run away and no super cheesy grins yet. This one is of Maggie on Easter:

My chunk-a-monk

Maggie has the most beautiful, sweet, pinchable, kissable, snuggable, lovely rolls that I have ever seen on a baby. Just look at those cheeks! Awwwwwww. I can’t help but be more enamored of her every.single.day. She is just an amazing baby. I’m wondering what I did to get so lucky, not once but twice. Is this all going to come back to haunt me later?

My aunt sent me an e-mail yesterday with this picture in it. I decided it would make a cute avatar.

Uh oh, I’m a spoiler

April 7th, 2006

I fear that my kids are going to be so completely spoiled but I have this horrible tendency that if Jayce asks for something and I can see know reason not to get it for him then I usually buy it. I’m sure that this will change as he gets older and he requests get bigger but right now when his requests consist of raisins or a Rangers baseball shirt then I’m likely to oblige. On Wednesday we got a catalog in the mail from MLB.com full of all kinds of baseball related stuff. Jayce is now obsessed with it – it’s actually in his carseat right now because I told him he couldn’t take it to school. So then on Wednesday night he decided he wanted a Rangers baseball shirt for Jayce. We had said we were going shopping so he assumed he was getting one that night. Unfortunately we were going to the grocery store so no shirt for Jayce. At bedtime he didn’t want to go to bed without a Texas Rangers baseball shirt for Jayce so Richard went into the closet and pulled out his jersey. I need to get pictures of Jayce in Richard’s jersey – it’s hilariously big. He ended up using it as a blanket. Cutest.thing.ever. So today I made it to Target and found Jayce his very own Texas Rangers baseball shirt. I would like to wait and give it as an “Easter” gift but I know I can’t wait another week. I’ll be giving it to him tomorrow.

The season has begun

April 7th, 2006

Yep – baseball season is upon us. It started this week and now it is on every night at our house. I am absolutely loving Tivo right now and the fact that it will only record whatever channel that is on. Yeah, apparently that crap they show on tv about watching one channel while recording another is just for people with fancy pants dishes that are newer than our sad single?LNB (whatever that means) dish. But that has finally come in handy because I am often recording shows in the evening and Tivo must change the channel off of the never ending baseball games. Do you realize those things are three hours long? It’s not so bad when the Rangers are playing in TX or on the east coast but when they go out west the games don’t start until 9p.m. and Richard insists on watching the whole thing. And now he has a partner in crime. Jayce sees a game on tv and says “baseball game!” and becomes suddenly mesmerized. Tonight we’re heading out to another game at the AA ball park.?This time to see the AA team, the Rough Riders, which I must admit sounds just wrong coming out of the mouth of a 2-year-old. How on earth did I, the most unathletic girl on the planet, marry a total sports nut? And what was I thinking giving him kids to mold?

“My throw a fit”

April 5th, 2006

I love this portion of toddlerhood when little kids insist on commenting on whatever they plan to do. Jayce will often tell us exactly what he’s about to do – especially when it’s something that will get him in trouble.

“My hit baseball in house”

“My pick Maggie up”

“My throw ball at Tie-Dye”

I’m sure you get the picture. Well lately he’s been telling us he’s going to throw a fit when he’s upset about something or just plain tired. It’s quite hilarious?to watch him throw himself on the floor and say “My throw a fit” and all I can do is laugh. The best part is it often makes him laugh too and he gets distracted from the actual fit throwing enough to pick himself up and go on with life. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing that I frequently find temper tantrums so damn funny. It’s like the sheer indignity of being a two-year-old is just too much to handle sometimes and the only response is to cry big tears and loud sobs. And when he accompanies that with the throwing himself on the floor I just can’t help but smile. Ah, to have the problems of a two-year-old. Now whining is a whole ‘nuther ballgame. I can take a fit over whining any day.

ballgame and fishing…aka Richard drives me crazy

April 3rd, 2006

We have fallen into a pattern of finding Jayce stuff to do each weekend. This sounds negative but it’s really a very good thing. It gets us out of the house and keeps us busy, often involves some kind of exercise or at least a lot of walking, and keeps Jayce from watching The Wiggles all day long.

So Friday night we bought tickets to a baseball game in Frisco. It was a Rangers game at the AA ballpark which was really neat?- a small family friendly ballpark with the big names. Jayce was uber excited about going. It was actually great leverage all day long – we just kept reminding him of the ballgame later and he probably would have done anything we asked.?I was dreading the ballgame. Jayce has this tendency (being a 2-year-old) to be excited about something but then loses interest after 2 minutes. I figured the ball game would be the same way – he would sit in his seat for a minute and a half then be done with the whole ballgame experience. I thought I would have to walk him around the ball park while Richard watched the game because in spite of having a 2-year-old Richard still believes he should actually get to watch the game when we go. Surprisingly?Jayce was actually interested in the whole thing for a couple of hours before saying “baseball game finished”. He sat in his seat or stood in front of it and watched the game, people, and the between inning fun with the mascots. He talked non-stop about baseball, the Rangers, Ranger Captain (the mascot). He wouldn’t even try cotton candy and he asked repeatedly for soda. He had an absolute blast and won’t stop talking about going to another baseball game. Good thing I bought Richard those tickets. Maggie slept through part of the game but was wide-eyed watching everything for most of it.

Then Richard decides he wants to take Jayce fishing and I figure the ballgame was such a success, why not? Bad, bad thinking. Two-year-old, water, waiting for fish, hook on end of invisible string are just a few ingredients of the recipe for potential disaster. We called up Tiffany and tell her the plan so she can bring Nicolaus if she wants to. She says she’ll meet us there. Richard starts the fishing fun while I go sit under a tree to feed Maggie. I watch Jayce run circles around the pier, climb rocks next to the pier and all in all have nothing to do with fishing. Richard spends this entire time trying to fish and not paying attention to our son. I am so glad Jayce did not fall in the water but I will say it had nothing to do with parenting. Tiffany gets there with Nicolaus and she helps corrall Jayce while Richard continues to fish. I figure I’ll catch a few pictures of the boys fishing together since nobody was really catching any fish. I pull out my camera about the same time that Jayce starts playing with Nicolaus’ fishing rod. The string gets tangled around the boys and I’m not sure how they managed to not hook either of them. I put my camera down to untangle them since Richard is still so busy fishing. He proceeds to make some snarky comment about me putting my camera down where it could fall in the water. I nearly smacked him upside the head – I just couldn’t decide whether to use my camera or the fishing rod with the hook on it. I couldn’t believe he had the nerve to stand there and fish while his son had a hook inches from his foot and then give me a hard time about my camera when I jumped up to help. It was definitely time to go home at that point. We packed up the kiddos and all our stuff and headed home before I shoved my husband in the water.

?Jayce Fishing?? Jayce climbing rocks????Is it time to go yet?? ?Sunburn

Momma, talk story

March 29th, 2006

This is what I hear from the back seat of the car now on a regular basis.

Momma, talk story. Momma, talk Tie-dye story. My want Tie-dye Zoe story.

A couple of weeks ago Richard decided to tell Jayce bedtime stories instead of reading books before bed. Richard told Jayce all about a boy named Jayce who went fishing with his friend Nicolaus and then another story about a boy named Jayce who had a dog named Tie-dye… Well now?Jayce loves story time and he absolutely loves to hear Momma tell stories. If Richard tries to tell a story Jayce gets mad and tells him “NO, Momma talk story!”. I’m not sure why he wants to hear the story from me but he does. I’m not particularly good with these stories and I’m always recycling the same stories over and over.?This doesn’t seem to bother him one bit though.?The worst part is that I really don’t like telling these stories. I can never come up with ideas and I just don’t like being distracted in the car. Lame, I know, but no one said I had to love everything about motherhood. I would have thought that Richard would feel bad about Jayce not wanting his stories but he encourages it. When we hear “talk story” from the back seat Richard will now ask Jayce if he wants Momma to tell him a story?so I guess Richard doesn’t really like telling the stories either.?He frequently makes it worse by throwing out suggestions like “tell a story about flying monkeys,?a choo choo train, and a bird”. Don’t you want to hear how that one turned out?
